Conservation
The arts and the natural world
In 2023, as part of my Artist Residency for Plantlife*, - and supported by Arts Council England’s Developing your Creative Practice Fund - I set off on a wildflower treasure hunt to uncover rare species; many of which are currently living on the edge. These species are often the tiniest of creatures and plants. The ones you may not give a second glance: but, when you come down to their level - when you blur out the rest of the world and zoom right in - you are blown away by their fragile strength and beauty. This was my aim throughout the entire journey. I wanted to step out of the ‘big picture’ and get comfortable with the minute moments. To observe without the innate need to consume and immediately turn a spectacle into a piece of art.
My transformative journey last summer visiting some of the rarest plants in the UK, has strengthened my passion for conservation. From the rugged coast of the Highlands to the road verges of Kent, I encountered and connected with overlooked but remarkable plant species such as Lady Orchid, Purple Oxytropis, Scottish Primrose and Twinflower. In February 2024 a collection of my work in watercolour and natural pigment inks, were shown in Philip Mould & Co’s Gallery, where I showcased a raw and emotional response to the fragility and resilience of life. It is my deep belief and passion that the arts have a duty to support conservation. We are, afterall, nature. Every one of my pieces begins with a conscious breath: a reminder that our inhale is nature's exhale, and - in turn - our exhale is nature's inhale. The arts have the power to inspire this sense of connection, helping weave the emotional threads that draw people closer and closer to nature’s needs.
I am seeking further Artist Residencies to explore how my work can continue to support wild plant conservation, please do get in touch with opportunities.
