Original Watercolour & Cyanotype | I am here - Bluebells I (11 x 15 ")

There was a moment standing in that ancient bluebell wood when everything felt impossibly still, and I became completely present in it — the soft hush of the trees, the sea of blue stretching through the undergrowth, and the fleetingness of the bloom itself. It felt fragile somehow, ancient and alive all at once. I remember being overwhelmed by how special it was to witness.

Bluebells are deeply woven into the British landscape, with the UK home to almost half of the world’s population of native bluebells. They are an iconic sign of spring, particularly in ancient woodlands where some have flourished undisturbed for centuries. Their beauty is matched by their vulnerability; native bluebells are protected in the UK, and it is illegal to uproot them from the wild. Trampling can take years for them to recover, making these brief displays all the more precious.

I’m not sure I could ever recreate work like this — it feels so tied to that exact moment in time, with the bluebells in bloom for only a few short weeks each year. Their fleeting appearance is part of what makes them so magical.

These pieces bring together cyanotype, watercolour, and my poetry. It feels as though everything I’ve been experimenting with and exploring more deeply has finally come together in one place — inspired by a landscape that is both delicate and enduring, and by a flower that reminds us how important it is to protect the wild beauty that still remains.

Measures 275× 375 mm (11 X 15 inches) , unmounted and unframed, painted on lightly textured Saunders Waterford 200gsm paper, this mixed media work is part cyanotype toned with a hibiscus tea botanical steep - which may change slightly overtime, finished with light fast mineral pigment artisan pan watercolour. I recommend UV glass when framing.

I have used Spanish Bluebells in my work as native Bluebells are a protected species. I am careful to only collect from an abundant flower source and do not take wildflowers that are endangered, I use naturally broken or windfall pieces or plants that I grow to use specifically in my art.
